Subspecies
Was formerly considered sufficiently distinct to be placed in a monotypic subfamily Jacameropinae, although this no longer considered warranted. Specific scientific name frequently spelt as aurea, but this incorrect as genus name is masculine. Slight variations in tone and intensity of upperpart and underpart coloration in different parts of range, but considerable overlap mitigates against naming of further geographical subspecies.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • penardi Bangs & Barbour, 1922   -  Costa Rica (Caribbean slope), south to western Colombia (east to eastern Andes) and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas).
  • aureus (Müller, 1776)   -  Colombia east of Andes, southern Venezuela and the Guianas.
  • isidori Deville, 1849   -  Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, western Brazil (east to R Purús) and northern Bolivia (Beni, northern La Paz).
  • ridgwayi Todd, 1943   -  Lower Amazonian Brazil (east of R Negro on northern bank, east of R Tapajós on southern bank) south to Mato Grosso.
