Habitat
Wet lowland forest, forest borders and tall secondary growth. From sea-level - 575 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (B), Ecuador.

Western Colombia from central Choc� (Quibd� area) south to north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas).

Population
Estimated population is 85,000 - 250,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture for oil palm plantations (biofuel speculation), timber extraction (Pacific rim exportation), industrial-scale river dredging for gold, coca production, which is stimulating immigration and colonisation to the region, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Relationships unclear, but possibly close to Spot-crowned Barbet (Capito maculicoronatus) and Orange-fronted Barbet (Capito squamatus), and also to Black-spotted Barbet (Capito niger).
