First Described (Guide)
(Lesson, 1845)

Habitat
Dry deciduous and humid forests, tall secondary growth and mangroves. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia (B), Ecuador (B), Peru (B).

Western slope of Andes and adjacent lowlands, from south-western Colombia (south-western Cauca) south to north-western Peru (south to Cajamarca).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pale-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus guatemalensis) and Crimson-crested Woodpecker (Campephilus melanoleucos). May be conspecific with Crimson-crested Woodpecker (Campephilus melanoleucos).

No subspecies.
