Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

pollens (Bonaparte, 1845) - Andes from north-central Colombia and south-western Venezuela (T�chira) south to Ecuador.
peruvianus (Cory, 1915) - Peru (south to Pasco).
