Estimated population is 20,000 - 35,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Status of subspecies leucogenis, turneri, garleppi and berlepschi unclear, and may be better considered as colour morphs of leucogenis.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

armata Gould, 1842 - Most of Andes of Chile and Argentina.
colombiana Des Murs, 1845 - Andes from Venezuela to northern Ecuador.
leucogenis (Tschudi, 1843) - Andes from central Ecuador to central Peru.
turneri Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1869 - Andes of southern Peru.
garleppi von Berlepsch, 1894 - Andes of Bolivia.
berlepschi Hartert, 1909 - Andes of northern Chile and north-western Argentina.
