Habitat
Lowland marshes, swamps, lagoons, the banks of slow-flowing rivers, seasonally flooded alluvial plains, often in areas surrounded by forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia (B), Venezuela (B).

Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss through wetland drinage, egg collection, hunting and trade are the main threats.

Food
Vegetarian. Green parts of succulent aquatic plants.

Voice
A powerful bugled 'klerr-a-ruk, cherio'. One of the loudest birds in the world.
