Subspecies
Birds of eastern Panama have been separated into subspecies hypopius, but this division not normally accepted.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- pudibundus Peters, JL, 1929 - North-eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua.
- cinctus (Salvin, 1876) - Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and Panama.
- australis Chapman, 1915 - Pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador.
