Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura), and formerly with Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), but tracheal morphology different.
Subspecies granti has been considered separate species, including orienticola as subspecies, but there is extensive intergradation throughout present species. Has hybridized with White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata) in captivity.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
granti von Berlepsch, 1908 - Guyana and adjacent eastern Venezuela south of R Orinoco.
orienticola Todd, 1932 - South-eastern Venezuela and north-western Brazil north of R Amazon and R Solimes.
jacquacu Spix, 1825 - Amazonia south of R Amazon and R Solimes in western Brazil, eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, Peru and northern Bolivia.
speciosa Todd, 1915 - Central and eastern Bolivia.
