Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From 100 - 1,800 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been considered conspecific with Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura), and formerly with Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), but tracheal morphology different.

Forms superspecies with Crested Guan (Penelope purpurascens), Cauca Guan (Penelope perspicax), White-winged Guan (Penelope albipennis) and Dusky-legged Guan (Penelope obscura).

Subspecies granti has been considered separate species, including orienticola as subspecies, but there is extensive intergradation throughout present species. Has hybridized with White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata) in captivity.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • granti von Berlepsch, 1908   -  Guyana and adjacent eastern Venezuela south of R Orinoco.
  • orienticola Todd, 1932   -  South-eastern Venezuela and north-western Brazil north of R Amazon and R Solimes.
  • jacquacu Spix, 1825   -  Amazonia south of R Amazon and R Solimes in western Brazil, eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, Peru and northern Bolivia.
  • speciosa Todd, 1915   -  Central and eastern Bolivia.
