Extreme southern USA (lower Rio Grande valley and south-eastern corner of Texas) south through eastern and south-central Mexico (south to Puebla and southern Veracruz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).

Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • glaucescens (Ridgway, 1900)   -  Extreme southern USA (southern Texas) and north-eastern Mexico (western Tamaulipas and Nuevo León). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • luxuosus (Lesson, R, 1839)   -  Extreme southern USA (lower Rio Grande valley and south-eastern corner of Texas) south through eastern and south-central Mexico (south to Puebla and southern Veracruz). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • speciosus (Nelson, 1900)   -  Pacific slope of Mexico in Nayarit and Jalisco. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • vividus (Ridgway, 1900)   -  Pacific slope of southern Mexico (from Colima and Guerrero east to western Guatemala (Solola, in Patulul). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • maya (van Rossem, 1934)   -  Tabasco and Yucatán Peninsula (except extreme southern Quintana Roo), in eastern Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • confusus Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Pacific slope of southern Chiapas (Mexico) and Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
  • centralis (van Rossem, 1934)   -  South-eastern Mexico (extreme eastern Tabasco and adjacent parts of Chiapas east through extreme southern Quintana Roo), northern and eastern Guatemala, Belize and northern Honduras. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green Jay (Cyanocorax yncas).
