Subspecies
Geotrygon lawrencii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Purplish-backed Quail-Dove (Zentrygon lawrencii) and Tuxtla Quail-Dove (Zentrygon carrikeri) following AOU (1998).

Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Forms superspecies with Tuxtla Quail-Dove (Zentrygon carrikeri), with which usually considered conspecific.

No subspecies.
