Subspecies
Geographical variation largely clinal, plumage becoming darker from west to east.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kangrae Whistler, 1939 - Western Himalayas in Kashmir and northern India (Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand).
nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836) - Central and eastern Himalayas from western Nepal east to north-eastern India (east to north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh) and south-western China (southern and south-eastern Xizang).
intensicolor (Stuart Baker, 1925) - South-central China (southern Gansu, western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan), northern Myanmar and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin).
