Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Grey-capped Greenfinch (Chloris sinica), Yellow-breasted Greenfinch (Chloris spinoides), European Greenfinch (Chloris chloris) and presumably also Vietnamese Greenfinch (Chloris monguilloti). Has been treated as conspecific with Yellow-breasted Greenfinch (Chloris spinoides) and Vietnamese Greenfinch (Chloris monguilloti).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

taylori (Kinnear, 1939) - Southern China (south-eastern Xizang). Non-breeding (possibly resident) also extreme north-eastern India (north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh).
ambigua (Oustalet, 1896) - Southern China (western and southern Sichuan, western and south-eastern Yunnan, western Guizhou), north-eastern and eastern Myanmar, northern Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin). Non-breeding north-western Thailand.
