Habitat
Sparse larch woods, tussocks on steep hillsides, bamboo thickets, dense bamboo undergrowth in mixed coniferous forest. From c.2,440 - 3,050 m.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland) (B) (NB).

Southern Gansu and extreme northern Sichuan, in central China.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Loss and fragmentation of forest due to exploitation for timber and clearance for cultivation and pasture, is the main threat.

Voice
Flocks call with rather spluttering 'chrr-rr-rr-rr', interspersed with sharp 'tsip' and 'tsit-it' notes.

Sometimes placed together with Spectacled Parrotbill (Sinosuthora conspicillata), Vinous-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora webbiana), Brown-winged Parrotbill (Sinosuthora brunnea), Ashy-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora alphonsiana), Grey-hooded Parrotbill (Sinosuthora zappeyi), Fulvous Parrotbill (Suthora fulvifrons), Black-throated Parrotbill (Suthora nipalensis), Golden Parrotbill (Suthora verreauxi) and Black-browed Parrotbill (Chleuasicus atrosuperciliaris) in a separate genus, Suthora.
