Subspecies
This species and Brown Parrotbill (Cholornis unicolor) sometimes placed in a separate genus, Heteromorpha. Although taipaiensis was first mooted as a distinct subspecies in 1937, it was not formally described as such until 36 years later.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
paradoxus Verreaux, J, 1871 - Southern Gansu south to south-central Sichuan, also Daba Mts (north-eastern Sichuan-south-eastern Shaanxi), in central China.
taipaiensis (Cheng, Lo & Chao, 1973) - Qinling Mts, in southern Shaanxi (central China).
