Subspecies
Suggested as forming a superspecies with Dusky Fulvetta (Schoeniparus brunneus), and often considered conspecific, but the two occur sympatrically in China and differ morphologically. Individuals of present species observed in central Laos have not been assigned to subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • mandellii (Godwin-Austen, 1876)   -  Bhutan, north-eastern Indian hill states and western Myanmar.
  • intermedius Rippon, 1900   -  North-eastern and eastern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan west of R Salween).
  • genestieri Oustalet, 1897   -  Southern China (Yunnan east of R Salween east to south-western Sichuan, western Hunan and western Guangxi), northern Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
  • cui Eames, JC, 2002   -  South-eastern Laos and central Vietnam (central Annam).
  • dubius (Hume, 1874)   -  South-eastern Myanmar (south to northern Tenasserim) and western Thailand.
