Subspecies
Relationships of genus uncertain. Most of recent studies indicate that it should be placed in the New World family Vireonidae.
Proposed subspecies laotianus (from Laos) considered inseparable from intermedius; recent review suggests that indochinensis and yaoshanensis might also be synonymized with intermedius.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
aenobarbulus (Temminck, 1835) - Garo Hills (Meghalaya), in north-eastern India.
intermedius (Hume, 1877) - Northern, eastern and south-eastern Myanmar (including northern Tenasserim), northern and western Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam and southern China (western and southern Yunnan, Hainan).
yaoshanensis Stresemann, 1929 - Yao Shan (Guangxi), in south-eastern China.
