Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • sherriffi Kinnear, 1934   -  Eastern Bhutan and adjacent north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh).
  • indiraji Ripley, Saha & Beehler, 1991   -  South-eastern Arunachal Pradesh (Namdapha National Park), in north-eastern India.
  • souliei Oustalet, 1898   -  North-central Arunachal Pradesh (north-eastern India) east to northern Myanmar and southern China (north-western Yunnan west of R Salween).
  • rocki Riley, 1929   -  North-western Yunnan (east of R Salween).
  • halsueti (David, 1875)   -  Central China (southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi, northern and north-eastern Sichuan).
  • nanchuanensis Li, G, Yang & Yu, 1992   -  South-central China (central Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan).
  • troglodytoides (Verreaux, 1870)   -  Southern China (south-western and west-central Sichuan south to extreme north-eastern Yunnan and northern Guizhou).
