Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, temperate forest and shrubland. From 1,100 - 3,660 m.

Range (Guide)
Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Has been treated as conspecific with Giant Laughingthrush (Garrulax maximus), and the two appear to intergrade between upper R Subansiri (India) and Tsangpo Valley, in south-eastern Xizang (China).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • griseicauda (Koelz, 1950)   -  Northern India (Uttaranchal Pradesh) and western Nepal.
  • ocellata (Vigors, 1831)   -  Central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh) and adjacent southern China (southern and south-eastern Xizang).
  • maculipectus (Hachisuka, 1953)   -  Northern Myanmar and southern China (western and north-western Yunnan).
  • artemisiae (David, 1871)   -  East-central China (southern Gansu south to west-central Sichuan and extreme north-eastern Yunnan; western Hubei).
