The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
monileger Riley, 1930 - West-central Nepal east to Bhutan, north-eastern Indian states (except eastern Arunachal Pradesh and adjacent north-eastern Assam), eastern Bangladesh, western and central Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
badius Ripley, 1948 - North-eastern India (eastern and south-eastern Arunachal Pradesh and Patkai Range, in eastern Assam) and extreme northern Myanmar.
stuart Meyer de Schauensee, 1955 - South-eastern Myanmar (including extreme northern Tenasserim) and north-western Thailand.
fuscatus Baker, ECS, 1918 - North-central and central Tenasserim (southern Myanmar) and adjacent western Thailand.
schauenseei Delacour & Greenway, 1939 - Extreme eastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, northern Laos and southern China (southern Yunnan).
tonkinensis Delacour, 1927 - Northern Vietnam (Tonkin, northern Annam) and south-eastern China (southern and eastern Guangxi).
melli Stresemann, 1923 - South-eastern China (southern Hunan, southern Zhejiang, Fujian, northern and north-central Guangdong).
