Subspecies
Putative subspecies grandis (from Yunnan, in southern China) considered indistinguishable from henrici.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • griseiceps (Hume, 1873)   -  Southern Myanmar (Pegu Yomas). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-crowned Bulbul (Alophoixus griseiceps).
  • robinsoni (Ticehurst, 1932)   -  Southern Myanmar (Tenasserim).
  • henrici (Oustalet, 1896)   -  Southern China (southern Yunnan east to eastern Guangxi), northern Thailand, northern and central Laos and northern Vietnam (Tonkin).
  • pallidus (Swinhoe, 1870)   -  Hainan.
  • isani (Deignan, 1956)   -  North-eastern Thailand.
  • annamensis (Delacour & Jabouille, 1924)   -  Central Vietnam (northern and central Annam).
  • khmerensis (Deignan, 1956)   -  Southern Laos, Cambodia (except south-west) and central Vietnam (central and southern Annam).
