Nest
A cup of feathers and grass, in an excavated hole in a river bank or sand-cliff.

Clutch Size: 4 - 6
Color: fairly glossy, smooth, white
Incubation: 14 days

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Plain Martin (Riparia paludicola), Congo Sand Martin (Riparia congica) and Sand Martin (Riparia riparia). Until recently considered conspecific with Sand Martin (Riparia riparia), but differs morphologically and vocally, and found in separate breeding colonies in wide area of sympatry (full extent of which not yet clear).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

gavrilovi (Sharpe & Wyatt, 1893) - Breeds central Siberia east to R Lena, and Cisbaikalia south to Altai and Tuva Republic.
transbaykalica Goroshko, 1993 - Breeds Transbaikalia.
diluta (Sharpe & Wyatt, 1893) - Southern and south-eastern Kazakhstan. Winters north-western India and Nepal.
indica Ticehurst, 1916 - Pakistan and northern India.
fohkienensis (La Touche, 1908) - Central and eastern China.
tibetana Stegmann, 1925 - South-western China (Xizang-Qinghai Plateau).
