Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Erithacus. Vocalizations very similar to those of White-tailed Rubythroat (Calliope pectoralis), and apparent intermediacy of subspecies tschebaiewi of White-tailed Rubythroat (Calliope pectoralis) suggests that a single species may be involved. Geographical variation weak and clinal. Proposed eastern subspecies camtschatkensis and beicki considered unwarranted.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
calliope (Pallas, 1776) - Siberia to Japan; > to south-eastern Asia, Philippines and Palau Is.
