Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos (B), Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam.
Breeds north-eastern Indian Subcontinent (Himalayan foothills eastern from Uttarakhand), northern and central Myanmar, southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi, Hainan), northern Thailand and northern and central Indochina. Non-breeding far north-eastern India, Bangladesh, probably southern China, and southern south-eastern Asia south to Sumatra and western Java.

Subspecies
Earlier theory that this is a relatively ancient form, with close resemblance to Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus), not supported by recent DNA studies, which suggest comparatively recent separation from Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus).
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) which has a slimmer bill, longer tail which is more deeply forked and only slightly turned-up at the ends.
