Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest.
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam.
Eastern Himalayas in Bhutan and north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam), northern Myanmar, southern China (extreme south-eastern Xizang and western Yunnan), and apparently isolated population in northern Vietnam (northern Tonkin).

Birds from northern Vietnam (Tonkin) described as a subspecies, kurodae , but differences from birds in rest of species' range appear minimal.
