Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,600 - 3,000 m, occasionally 1,200 - 3,050 m.
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico.
Mountains of extreme south-eastern Mexico (south-eastern Chiapas), Guatemala, western and central Honduras, northern El Salvador (Montecristo National Park and Cerro El Pital) and north-western Nicaragua.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Together with Dwarf Jay (Cyanolyca nanus ), Silvery-throated Jay (Cyanolyca argentigula ) and White-throated Jay (Cyanolyca mirabilis ) form a monophyletic group.
