Subspecies
Nominate subspecies and malayana intergrade in southern Myanmar (northern Tenasserim) and possibly more widely. These two are well differentiated from eastern subspecies, but the two groups intergrade in northern Laos, possibly also in south-western China. Population in south-central Vietnam (including Da Lat Plateau), currently included in melliana, may represent a separate, as yet undescribed subspecies. Further study is required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hardwickii (Jardine & Selby, 1830) - Northern India (Himachal Pradesh) eastern in Himalayan foothills and hill tracts to southern China (south-eastern Tibet, Yunnan), Myanmar, north-western Thailand and northern Laos.
malayana Robinson & Kloss, 1923 - Uplands of southern Myanmar (northern and central Tenasserim) and Peninsular Malaysia.
melliana Stresemann, 1923 - Uplands of southern China (from Guizhou and Guangxi east to Fujian) and of northern and central Vietnam (south to southern Annam).
lazulina (Swinhoe, 1870) - Uplands of Hainan I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Greyish-crowned Leafbird (Chloropsis lazulina).
