Large. Long-necked with small wattle before eye. Sexes alike.
Adults: Breeding: Whole of head, upperbreast, grey. Back, scapulars, lesser wing coverts, greyish-olive. Eyering, yellow. Eye, red. Tail, with with broad black subterminal band. Greater wing coverts, secondaries, white. Primaries, black. Breast band, black. Undertail, underwing coverts, white. Bill, tip black, basal two-thirds yellow. Small, wattle above base of bill, yellow. Legs, yellow. Non-breeding: Similar to breeding plumage but head browner, throat, whiter and black breast band reduced.
Immatures: Similar to non-breeding adult, but breast band may be absent. Upperparts, male have pale edges to feathers.
