Habitat
Breeds in alpine bog meadows and riverine marshes, favouring lacustrine marshes. From 2,600 - 4,900 m. Winters in river valleys and along reservoir shorelines in the vicinity of barley and spring wheat fields.

Range (Guide)

Bhutan (NB), China (mainland) (B) (NB), India (B) (NB), Vietnam.

Vagrant to Nepal (NB).

Eastern Ladakh (north-western India) through Tibet to Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Sichuan (western and central China). Winters from southern Tibet-Qinghai Plateau, Bhutan and north-western Arunachal Pradesh (north-eastern India) east to Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau (south-central China).

Population
Estimated population is 8,800 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through conversion to agriculture, over-grazing, pesticides, egg collecting, collision with powerlines, are the main threats.

Voice
Call is high-pitched and penetrating.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Common Crane (Grus grus) which is smaller, has white stripe from behind eye extending down nape and black primaries, but not secondaries. Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis) which has white primaries and more extensive white area behind eye.
