Subspecies
Resembles Sri Lanka Frogmouth (Batrachostomus moniliger) in coloration and pattern, and the two species replace each other geographically, but differences in the facial bristles, clutch size, egg size and adult plumage markings suggest that they are probably too dissimilar to be regarded as forming a superspecies. Sometimes treated as a subspecies of Horsfield's Frogmouth (Batrachostomus javensis), but differences in bill size and structure, development of facial bristles, relative tail length and vocalizations, and also perhaps in bare-part colours (bill said to be darker), too great for them to be considered even as forming a superspecies. Populations from southern parts of Myanmar to Indochina often separated racially as indochinae; they average smaller and shorter-tailed, but measurements overlap with those from India. Manipur birds ("rupchandi") are apparently inseparable from other Indian populations.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • hodgsoni (Gray, GR, 1859)   -  North-eastern India to Myanmar, south-western China, north-western Thailand, Laos and Annam.
  • indochinae Stresemann, 1937   -  Eastern Myanmar and south-western Hunnan (China) to northern Thailand, north-western Laos and central Vietnam.
