Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Cobalt-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris cyanoptera) and Golden-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris chrysoptera).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- jugularis (Müller, 1776) - South-western Mexico through Central America mostly on Pacific slope to northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
- exsul Todd, 1917 - Eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.
