Subspecies
May be related, but not very closely, to Brown-headed Barbet (Psilopogon zeylanicus) and Lineated Barbet (Psilopogon lineatus), also to White-cheeked Barbet (Psilopogon viridis), or possibly to Golden-throated Barbet (Psilopogon franklinii) and Black-browed Barbet (Psilopogon oorti). Species name sometimes spelt erroneously as faiostriata.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

praetermissus (Kloss, 1918) - Northern Thailand, Laos, northern Vietnam and southern and south-eastern China (south of Canton).
faiostrictus (Temminck, 1832) - Central and southern Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam.
