Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Picoides. Most closely related to Darjeeling Woodpecker (Dendrocopos darjellensis), and probably more distantly to the Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos macei) superspecies.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
cathpharius (Blyth, 1843) - West-central Nepal east to Arunachal Pradesh.
ludlowi (Vaurie, 1959) - South-eastern Tibet (southern Tsangpo Valley).
pyrrhothorax (Hume, 1881) - North-eastern India south of R Brahmaputra (Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram) and western Myanmar (west of R Chindwin).
pernyii (Verreaux, J, 1867) - West-central and south-western China (south-western Gansu, northern and eastern Sichuan, north-western Yunnan). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker (Dryobates pernyii).
innixus Bangs & Peters, JL, 1928 - Central China (southern Shaanxi, Hubei).
tenebrosus Rothschild, 1926 - Northern, central and eastern Myanmar, central and southern Yunnan, north-western Thailand, northern Laos and western Tonkin.
