North-eastern Indian hills (Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram), and possibly also central and south-eastern Bangladesh, to west, southern and eastern Myanmar and south-western China (western and southern Yunnan), and south to western and central Thailand, Cambodia, southern Laos and south-central Annam.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos macei). Birds from Vietnam have sometimes been separated as subspecies vietnamensis, but available evidence suggests they are not clearly distinguishable.

atratus (Blyth, 1849) - North-eastern India to Myanmar, south-western China, Thailand, Cambodia and southern Laos.
