Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), with which frequently hybridizes in the limited areas of overlap in basin of R Yenisey. Birds from various parts of Siberia formerly awarded subspecies turensis, janensis and kolymensis, and those from Transbaikalia macrurus.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • parvirostris Bonaparte, 1856   -  Eastern Siberia, from lower R Yenisey to the upper R Anadyr, south to Transbaikalia, Manchuria, Ussuriland and Sikhote Alin Mts; Sakhalin I.
  • kamtschaticus Kittlitz, 1858   -  Kamchatka Peninsula.
  • stegmanni Potapov, 1985   -  L Baikal area, Sajan Mts and northern Mongolia, from Khangai Mts to Kentei Mts.
  • urogalloides Bonaparte, 1856   -  Eastern Siberia to northern Manchuria, Ussuriland and Sakhalin I.
