Size

First Described (Guide)
(Linnaeus, 1758)

Habitat
Dense, dark woodland with bare patches of ground, especially young plantations over about 10 years old.

Range (Guide)
China (mainland) (B).

Introduced to United Kingdom (B) (NB).

Central China, from south-eastern Qinghai and southern Gansu east through southern Shaanxi to western Henan and western Hubei, and south through Sichuan and Guizhou to northern Guangxi. Introduced very locally to England.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Seeds, plant shoots and insects.

Voice
A loud, metallic, crowing call, 'chak' or 'cha-chak', during the breeding season, otherwise generally silent.
