Habitat
Open, dry, subtropical evergreen (mainly oak), coniferous (chiefly pine) or mixed conifer-broadleaf forests on steep, often rocky hillsides interrupted by scrub and grassy clearings. From 700 - 2,800 m.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss and trapping are the main threats.

Voice
Male territorial call, is a crowing 'cher-a-per cher-a-per cher cher cheria cheria'. Also, cackling 'waaak' notes and sharp 'tuk tuk' when alarmed.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

humiae (Hume, 1881) - Mountains of extreme north-eastern India east to R Irrawaddy in Burma.
burmanicus (Oates, 1898) - Central-southern China (south-western Yunnan and Guangxi) and eastern Burma (east of R Irrawaddy) south-east to northern Thailand.
