Habitat
Broadleaf forest (both evergreen and deciduous) and mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest. From 200 - 1,900 m.

Range (Guide)

China (mainland) (B).

South-eastern China from Jiangsu and Anhui south through Zhejiang, Fujian and Hunan to Guizhou and Guangxi.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 499,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through burning of forest by man-made hill fires, collection of firewood, and illegal hunting are the main threats.

Voice
Low clucks and chuckles. A shrill squeal.

Similar Species
Larger female Reeves's Pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) which has a warmer buff head, lacks black throat and red facial skin.
