Habitat
Subtropical, evergreen broadleaf forest and mixed deciduous-coniferous forest, and open areas above the treeline. From 600 - 1,800 m.

China (mainland) (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss and modification, particularly where this leads to habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting for food are the main threats.

Voice
Territorial call consists of a repeated rapid burst of 5-25 notes lasting 2-8 seconds, diminishing in pitch and volume. Also utters sharp, repeated notes as 'summons' calls.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

caboti (Gould, 1857) - South-eastern China (Guangdong north-east to Zhejiang).
guangxiensis Cheng & Wu, 1979 - South-central China (north-eastern Guangxi).

Similar Species
Female Temminck's Tragopan (Tragopan temminckii) (possibly sympatric in west of range) which has larger pale oval spotting to underparts, more prominent whitish arrow markings on upperparts and bluish skin around eye.
