Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland moist shrubland. From 300 - 2,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Laos (B), Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies laotiana not generally accepted and instead included within subspecies guttata.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • rufogularis (Blyth, 1850)   -  Northern India (from Uttar Pradesh east to Assam) and Nepal.
  • intermedia (Blyth, 1855)   -  North-eastern India (Assam south of R Brahmaputra) east to Burma (Arrakan Yomas).
  • tickelli (Hume, 1880)   -  Eastern and southern Burma (from South Shan to Tenasserim) east to Thailand and south-western Laos.
  • euroa (Bangs & Phillips, JC, 1914)   -  South-central China (south-eastern Yunnan) to northern Laos.
  • guttata Delacour & Jabouille, 1928   -  Central Vietnam.
  • annamensis (Robinson & Kloss, 1919)   -  South-central Vietnam.
