Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,500 - 2,700 m.
Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Vietnam.

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- millardi (Baker, ECS, 1921) - Western Himalayas.
- torqueola (Valenciennes, 1826) - Nepal east to Tibet and northern Burma.
- batemani (Ogilvie-Grant, 1906) - Northern Burma and south-central China (western Yunnan, south-western Sichuan).
- griseata Delacour & Jabouille, 1930 - North-western Vietnam.
- interstincta Ripley, 1951 - Southern and south-eastern Assam (north-eastern India).
