Subspecies
Genus formerly submerged in Pycnonotus. Isolated population on Ufipa Plateau, in Tanzania, named as australis, is considered a synonym of nominate. Conversely, has been proposed as a sibling species on basis of its paler underparts and, in particular, vocal differences. Other described subspecies are saturatus (R Honi, in Kenya) and eugenius (western shore of L Victoria, in north-western Tanzania), both poorly differentiated and also synonymized with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
congener (Reichenow, 1897) - South-western Senegal and western Guinea east to south-western Nigeria (west of R Niger).
latirostris (Strickland, 1844) - South-eastern Nigeria and Bioko I east to extreme southern Sudan and central Kenya, south to northern Angola, south-central DRCongo and northern Burundi, also north, north-western and western Tanzania (Loliondo; Kigoma south to Kungwe-Mahare Mts; Ufipa Plateau).
