Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Crowned Hornbill (Lophoceros alboterminatus) and Bradfield's Hornbill (Lophoceros bradfieldi) and closely related also to Hemprich's Hornbill (Lophoceros hemprichii). All have similar calls and displays.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
semifasciatus (Hartlaub, 1855) - Senegambia east to south-western Nigeria. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, West African Pied Hornbill (Lophoceros semifasciatus).
fasciatus (Shaw, 1811) - South-eastern Nigeria to southern Chad and east to Uganda, south to northern Angola and south-central Zaire.
