Dense undergrowth in primary forest and clearings. From 850 - 2,100 m.

Slopes of Mt Cameroon (western Cameroon).

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Burning of grassland by hunters is the main threat.

Highly distinctive, described as high-pitched, triple whistle.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Swierstra's Francolin (Pternistis swierstrai). Has been separated in genus Oreocolinus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Scaly Francolin (Pternistis squamatus) which has darker underparts and lacks bare red skin around the eyes.
