by Michele Peron from Jardín Botánico Nacional, Viña del Mar, Chile (song)

Subspecies
Similar in aspect and behaviour to Chopi Blackbird (Gnorimopsar chopi), but molecular data suggest closer relationship with quite different Scarlet-headed Blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus). Geographical variation partly clinal, body mass increases from north to south.

Proposed subspecies recurvirostris (described from Riesco I, in southern Chile), resembling reynoldsi but supposedly with slightly recurved bill, requires further study, as recent observers have not reported peculiarities in bill shape.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • curaeus (Molina, 1782) - Central and southern Chile from Coquimbo (rarely Atacama) south, including Chiloé I and most islands along coast, to Straits of Magellan, and south-western Argentina (Neuquén southern along Andes to Santa Cruz).
  • reynoldsi (Sclater, WL, 1939) - Southern Chile and extreme southern Argentina (Tierra del Fuego and nearby islands).
  • recurvirostris Markham, 1971 - Southern Chile (Magellanes).
