Subspecies
Genus often subsumed in Agelaius or Chrysomus. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates that relationship of present species to two congeners (Pale-eyed Blackbird (Agelasticus xanthophthalmus) and Unicolored Blackbird (Agelasticus cyanopus)) is not close. Individuals somewhat intermediate between nominate subspecies and petersii occur south of 42º south in Patagonia (Chile and Argentina).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
alticola (Todd, 1932) - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Puno) and western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and Oruro).
thilius (Molina, 1782) - Chile (Atacama south to Magallanes).
petersii (Laubmann, 1934) - Breeds Argentina (from at least Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe and Corrientes south to Santa Cruz), Uruguay and south-eastern Brazil (mostly along coastal marshes of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul); in austral winter extends to extreme north-eastern Argentina (Salta, Chaco, Formosa) and most of Paraguay, with few records in Bolivia (Izozog).
