by id from Charazani (near Estancia Jiskha Khara Kkota), Bautista Saavedra, Departamento de La Paz, Bolivia (song)

Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data suggest that genus is most closely related to the "hooded" group of sierra-finches (Black-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus atriceps), Peruvian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus punensis), Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus gayi) and Patagonian Sierra-Finch (Phrygilus patagonicus)). Also, that it belongs within the tanager family (Thraupidae).

Proposed subspecies connectens, described from upper Urubamba Valley (Cuzco), in southern Peru, doubtfully distinct from nominate, with which synonymized.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • sharpei (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1894)   -  Western and central Peru from Cajamarca south to Junín.
  • uropigyalis (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1837)   -  South-eastern Peru (Puno) and highlands of Bolivia south to northern Chile (Arica-Parinacota, Tarapacá and Antofagasta) and north-western Argentina (Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán).
  • connectens (Chapman, 1919)   -  Andes of southern Peru (above upper Urubamba Valley in Cuzco).
