Subspecies
Until recently was placed in Petrochelidon or Hirundo, but now considered not related to either of those groups. DNA-DNA hybridization data strongly indicate that it belongs with the "core martin group" and is close to Notiochelidon, Atticora and Neochelidon. Has sometimes been included in Stelgidopteryx, and vocalizations similar, but lacks "serrated" edge of outer primary of that genus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
oroyae (Chapman, 1924) - Central Peru.
andecola (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Andes in southern Peru, extreme northern Chile (Arica, Tarapacá), central and southern Bolivia and north-western Argentina (Salta, Jujuy).
