Habitat
Subtropical and tropical swamp forest. From 15 - 200 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil (B).

Eastern Brazil in coastal Bahia (Ilhéus, Valení§a).
 
Population
Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2011) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat loss and fragmentation is the main threat.

Voice
Consists of a sequence of short notes (27-28, nine emissions per second) similar to White-breasted Tapaculo (Eleoscytalopus indigoticus), which is a descending and accelerating series of very dry and harsh 'tchj' staccato notes. Also regular, frog-like, slightly ascending call 'frrrrrrrooww', lasting an average of 3.25 seconds. The alarm call consists of a low frequency short note.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Possibly only a subspecies or even a variant of White-breasted Tapaculo (Eleoscytalopus indigoticus). Known from only three specimens.

Similar Species
Closely resembles allopatric White-breasted Tapaculo (Eleoscytalopus indigoticus) which has conspicuous barring on the flank. It also has bluish-grey colouring at the base of the tibia compared with barred cinnamon plumage in indigoticus.
