Subspecies
Plumage features suggest close relationship to Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura pileata) and White-browed Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura xenothorax). Similarities in plumage to allopatric population of Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura pileata) have led to taxonomic confusion between the two. The differences greatest where the two are sympatric, suggesting character displacement.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • superciliaris Hellmayr, 1932   -  Western Andes of western Peru (Ancash, Lima).
  • albigularis Morrison, 1938   -  Western Andes in Huancavelica (south-western Peru).
  • striata (Philippi & Landbeck, 1863)   -  Andes of extreme south-western Peru (Arequipa south to Tacna) and north-western Chile (Tarapacá).
