Subspecies
Name formerly used for genus was Lichenops, but present name has priority. Appears closely allied to Knipolegus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
perspicillatus (Gmelin, 1789) - Extreme south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay southern in lowlands to central-southern Argentina (Río Negro). Winters in Paraguay, central Bolivia and southern Brazil.
andinus (Ridgway, 1879) - Breeds central Chile (Atacama south to Aisén) and southern Argentina (western Río Negro, Chubut, northern Santa Cruz). Winters in northern Argentina.
